In the application process for Social Security Disability it is helpful to see some of the facts and statistics as gathered by the Social Security Administration, please find below some statistics that were released by SSA in September of 2008. This information was composed by Social Security.

 

  • The government is paying 8.1 million people some type of disability pay.
  • 804,787 people were awarded some type of disability pay in 2007
  • 87 percent of all disability pay went to disabled workers.
  • Mental disorders accounted for one third of all disability payments.
  • Men make up 53% of all disability payees.
  • Women make up 47% of all disability payees.
  • Average disability payment is $1,004.00
  • Benefits terminated was 522,349 people.
  • Average age of disabled worker was 52.
  • In 2006 there were 2,026.017 applications from disabled workers, and the success rate on these applications was 32.7%, over 67% percent were denied at the hearing level. 
  • There are over 765,000 cases waiting on a hearing in the United States.
  • 106 days is the average waiting period from first application until first denial.  

 

As you can see Social Security Disability is a large program, it is easy to get lost in the system. I provide these facts above to give everyone a look inside and see how large this department is now. These stats do not indicate how many people fail to appeal their denials and give up, it is easy to be discouraged because of how much work and effort are put into an application, only to be denied, but before you give up on your application, please give my law firm a call.
